The Old Shippon and Beara Farmhouse are located one and a half miles from the village of Buckland Brewer. There is a post office in the village, a butchers' and a pub - The Coach and Horses - well-known locally for its good food.

The market towns of Bideford and Torrington are approximately 5 and 9 miles distant. Bideford, the larger of the two, has supermarkets, pubs, restaurants, chemists and most things you would expect to find in a medium sized town. Torrington is home to Dartington Crystal and Rosemoor Gardens.
